Ben Bikman
In Episode 2 of Uncommon Living, Benjamin Bikman, PhD & Professor Seager discuss the correlation of insulin resistance with chronic illness, metabolic health, mitochondrial dysfunction & how cold therapy can resolve these illnesses.
Ice Bath Insights
In a recent interview with Thomas Seager, PhD, Ben Bikman explains that every leading cause of death from chronic illness in the United States originates from insulin resistance. In Why We Get Fat: the Bikman Interviews, he explains that insulin resistance is characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction & associated with heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's, obesity, erectile dysfunction, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), cancer and obesity. One the remedies is cold plunge therapy. By stimulating the production of new mitochondria, and restoring brown fat to the adult human body, a regular practice of cold plunge therapy can reverse chronic illnesses and boost sex hormone levels. Examples are found in our journal:
-
The article Cold Plunge Protocols to Boost Testosterone describes how to use cold plunges and nutritional support to boost testosterone in men and women. Bikman attributes his own uncommonly high total testosterone levels to his daily cold plunge practice.
-
Cold Connection Hashimoto's Thyroiditis explains a case study of how brown fat supports thyroid function by converting the inactive form of thyroid hormone to a more active form. Brown fat and the thyroid work in concert, modulating one another's function, to govern metabolism. When adults have no brown fat, their thyroid can become dysregulated. By recruiting and activating brown fat to the body, ice baths help resolve thyroid disorders, such as Hashimoto's and Grave's disease.
