Alexis Cowan, PhD
From Doctorate of Philosophy to Undoctrination
Alexis J. Cowan, PhD earned her PhD at Princeton University in Professor Josh Rabinowitz’s lab -- one of the top metabolism research labs in the world. Then she left academia altogether to conduct independent research in metabolic physiology, mitochondrial medicine & light biology, and launch her Undoctrinate Yourself podcast.
Morozko CEO Thomas Seager, PhD was one of her first podcast guests. Others have included Dr. Jack Kruse, Dr. Sabine Hazan, and Dr. Kelsey Dexter.
Alexis Cowan, PhD & Professor Thomas Seager critique modern day education, science, medicine, & politics, the importance of empiricism & N=1, & the citizen science movement, as well as cold water immersion science & best cold therapy practices.
Bioharmonizing for health
Cold water immersion has become an essential aspect of Cowan's health & wellness practice. She uses her Morozko Ice Bath daily, because it is grounded, accepts Epsom salt, and low maintenance. On the Danny Jones podcast, she compares her Morozko to "being grounded as if you're in ocean water".
When she appeared on "The Competitive Edge" podcast with Daniel Hickman, Alexis explained that cold is incredible for offsetting the damage of "hyper tech" environments, and has powerful benefits for mental & metabolic health. They also are more efficient in comparison to cold air alone as Alexis emphasizes that you can get the benefits of ice baths in half of the time. She explains that the exposure to cold can boost dopamine & norepinephrine, improving cognition without the use of stimulants, as well as stimulate brown & beige fat, helping to remove substrates from the bloodstream & improve metabolic health.
